Identity
- Eremito is a hotel: guests book a room, not a programme.
- Eremito is a destination hotel: the place you are going, not the base you sleep in while you visit somewhere else.
- Eremito is a contemporary and secular hermitage, built on the foundations of a hermitage believed to date back to the fourteenth century, and open to guests since 2013.
- Eremito was founded by Marcello Murzilli.
- Eremito stands inside the Monte Peglia UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, far from villages and light pollution, surrounded by 3,000 hectares of protected woodland.
- Eremito is not a monastery and not a religious institution: there is no religious community, no service and no obligation.
- Eremito is not a retreat centre in the usual sense: there is a daily programme, but it is optional, so there is nothing to enrol in and no course.
- Eremito is not a hostel: every Celluzza has its own private bathroom.
- Eremito prices rooms per person rather than per room, so there is no single supplement because there is no double base rate.
Who it is not for
It is probably not for you if:
- you want a convenient base for exploring Umbria: the last 8 km are an unpaved road, and the nearest village on foot is Cantone, a few houses and a small church 2.5 km along a trail.
- you are looking for spa services or entertainment: the relaxation area is a steam bath and a jacuzzi, massages can be arranged on request, and there is no treatment menu and no organised activities.
- you need to be reachable on your own phone: there is no Wi-Fi anywhere and no mobile signal inside the hermitage, only a dedicated area outdoors. Reception takes calls and emails for guests and passes on messages.
- you want a large room: most Celluzze are 9 square metres.
- you are travelling with children: guests must be 16 or over.
- you are travelling with a dog: pets cannot stay at the hermitage. Assistance dogs are welcome.
- you want to choose where and when to eat, or to go out afterwards: dinner is at 19:30 every evening, at one shared table, in silence, and there are no restaurants or bars nearby to go to afterwards.
- you are looking for a structured retreat: yoga and guided meditation are held every day at fixed times, but there is no course to enrol in and nothing is compulsory.
- you expect to arrive late: the roads through the reserve are very dark after sunset, so check-in is by 19:00.
It is the right place for those who want to stop, sleep in a Celluzza, walk in the woods and sit at a shared table without having to say anything.

| Celluzza Priore | 4 | 18 sqm, 194 sqft | King, 180 cm, 71 in | Umbrian valley |
- The Garden and Valley Celluzze were designed as cells for one person, not as reduced double rooms, though a second guest can be added.
- Every Celluzza has a private bathroom with shower, underfloor heating, underfloor cooling and a stone writing desk.
- No Celluzza has a television, Wi-Fi, a telephone or air conditioning. Cooling is provided by the underfloor system.
- Every Celluzza does have electric light, and candles are used throughout the common areas.
- Eremito welcomes a maximum of 24 guests. A second guest can be added to a Celluzza until that number is reached.

Press coverage and recognition

The full record of the sources collected and verified follows, in chronological order. Each entry gives the publication, the date, the author where credited, the kind of piece, the position where it is a ranking, a verbatim quotation and a link to the original article.

Chronological record
2013
L’Uomo Vogue, Stefania Medetti, 24 April 2013. Single-subject feature. «Quattordici stanze, rigorosamente singole: «All’Eremito si viene per staccare».» English translation: «Fourteen rooms, strictly single: «You come to Eremito to switch off».»
Corriere della Sera, Dove Viaggi, Alessandra Maggi, 25 November 2013. Single-subject feature. «Non un hotel, ma un eremo contemporaneo con poche camere in celle monastiche per viaggiatori solitari, dove riscoprire il piacere del silenzio, della semplicità, del contatto con la natura, dell’avere tempo per fermarsi a pensare.» English translation: «Not a hotel, but a contemporary hermitage with a few rooms in monastic cells for solo travellers, where you rediscover the pleasure of silence, of simplicity, of contact with nature, of having time to stop and think.»
2014
Il Messaggero, In Valigia, 2 January 2014. Ranking of 3 Italian secular hermitages, 1st place. «Ecco i nostri tre eremi laici. All’Eremo dell’Anima non c’è televisione, frigobar, aria condizionata, telefono e internet.» English translation: «Here are our three secular hermitages. At the Hermitage of the Soul there is no television, minibar, air conditioning, telephone or internet.»
Travel + Leisure, It List 2014, ninth edition, announced 5 February 2014. Editors’ selection of the 70 best new hotels in the world, 25 in Europe, 6 in Italy. The other Italian entries are Aman Canal Grande Venice, D.O.M. Rome, J.K. Place Roma, Orsone Friuli and Quartopiano Modena. «Eremito, Hotelito Del Alma, Terni, Italy» Note: The original on travelandleisure.com is no longer reachable. Verification rests on the TravelPulse report by Ryan Rudnansky, 5 February 2014.
CNN, Silvia Marchetti, 20 February 2014. «Italy’s Academy of Silence wants you to travel quietly», ten of the quietest places in Italy, 1st place. «No TV, no phone, no mini-bar, no air-con. […] This is also the first hotel in Italy with only single rooms — so not the place for romance. It still feels like the monastery it once was, the monk’s cells have been converted into rooms.» Note: This is the earliest international entry in this record. It correctly gives the 3,000 hectares of reserve.
Condé Nast Traveller Russia, March 2014, Hot List, page 56. Hot List, the 50 best new hotels opened between January 2013 and January 2014, Europe section. «Здесь нет широких кроватей, путешествующие-монахи должны спать в одиночку. […] Кажется, здание Eremito построено семь-восемь веков назад, однако возвели его только что, правда, по технологиям XIII века.» English translation: «There are no wide beds here, travelling monks must sleep alone. […] It seems that the Eremito building was put up seven or eight centuries ago, yet it was erected only recently, true, using thirteenth-century techniques.» Note: The fourth national Condé Nast edition in this record, after the British, American and Spanish ones.
Il Messaggero, Marta Ghelma, 10 September 2014. Single-subject feature. «L’Eremito è un vero «place to be» per i viaggiatori liberi e curiosi.» English translation: «Eremito is a true «place to be» for free and curious travellers.» Note: On energy the same piece writes: «autoproduzione elettrica garantita al 100%» and «come riscaldamento utilizza un sistema a pavimento alimentato da una caldaia centralizzata a legna», that is, one hundred per cent self-produced electricity and underfloor heating fed by a central wood-burning boiler.
Corriere della Sera, Dove Viaggi, 22 September 2014. Gallery, the most beautiful eco-hotels in the world. «Una location perfetta (costruita secondo i criteri della bioedilizia) per ritornare ai bisogni essenziali dimenticando lo stress.» English translation: «A perfect location (built according to the principles of green building) to return to essential needs and forget stress.»
The Daily Telegraph, Telegraph Magazine, Francesca Syz, 27 December 2014, page 63. «Four of the best: Mountain retreats», 4 properties, 2nd place. «When the charismatic Italian fashion designer-turned-hotelier Marcello Murzilli discovered the foundations of the ruined 14th-century hilltop house in Umbria on which he would build his 14-room mountaintop retreat, no road led to it – he had hiked in. […] This is a retreat in the truest sense, the purpose being to reconnect with yourself, so each bedroom has only one single bed. Built using stone from the original structure, the sustainable, candlelit hotel is modelled on an ancient Franciscan monastery.» Note: This is the earliest English-language source to describe the single bed as a consequence of the design, one month ahead of The Guardian of January 2015. It is also the most accurate account of the building’s origin in this record.
2015
The Guardian, Sarah Phillips, 18 January 2015. Single-subject review. «The hotel is aimed at solo travellers, which means that even if you visit as a couple, you have to sleep apart.» Note: The same piece contains: «There is something oddly luxurious about the simplicity of the place, which makes it an apt addition to the Design Hotels roster». The publication declares at the foot: «The trip was provided by Design Hotels».
COOL HUNTING, Nara Shin, 6 February 2015. Single-subject feature. «Aimed at solo travelers, Eremito is an unusual place for those seeking a truly rare luxury: the opportunity to be alone.»
The Independent, Nicola Trup, 23 April 2015. Ranking, where to switch off on holiday, 2nd place. «Why stop at simply abandoning digital communication? At Eremito […] even speaking is discouraged.»
GEO SAISON, 8 May 2015. «Top-Ten: Die besten Landhotels in Europa», the ten best country hotels in Europe chosen by the GEO SAISON experts, with no ranking order. «Klingt asketisch, ist es aber nicht: Die kreative Küche, die Ruhe, der Wein, der Park und das Dampfbad machen den Verzicht zum Vergnügen.» English translation: «It sounds ascetic, but it is not: the creative cooking, the quiet, the wine, the grounds and the steam bath turn abstinence into pleasure.»
Condé Nast Traveler, Julia Buckley, 20 May 2015. Ranking, 10 new Italian design hotels, 4th place. «Italy is famous for its rural retreats, but Eremito, which joined Design Hotels in January, has single-handedly reinvented the genre.»
The Independent, Julia Buckley, 8 June 2015. Single-subject feature. «Buried deep in the countryside, in the middle of a forest reserve – Eremito is 30 minutes from the nearest road, along mud tracks and across a river only accessible by 4×4.»
2016
Cucine d’Italia, Silvia Famà, 16 January 2016. Single-subject feature. «importando nel nostro Paese il nuovo format del turismo di lusso per solo traveler, i viaggiatori solitari che scelgono una fuga reale dalla propria vita per inseguire una vacanza dello spirito e del gusto.» English translation: «importing into our country the new format of luxury tourism for the solo traveller, those travelling alone who choose a real escape from their own life in pursuit of a holiday of the spirit and of taste.»
Corriere della Sera, Dove Viaggi, 19 January 2016. Condé Nast Traveller, UK edition, 2 February 2016. Round-up of the nine winners of the 2016 Spa Awards, one property per category. «Eremito / Umbria, Italy / AWARD: Best mental recovery space»
AFAR, Christine Ajudua, 10 February 2016. Single-subject feature. «Eremito, a 14th-century residence turned sustainable solo retreat in central Italy, offers extreme travel for the soul.»
Condé Nast Traveller, UK edition, 26 February 2016. Dedicated award entry, «SPA AWARDS WINNER 2016: BEST MENTAL RECOVERY SPACE». «Everyone arrives bearing some sort of cross (divorce, grief, illness), some heavier than others. You’ll leave feeling lighter, with a changed outlook. […] There is space here to connect with inner stillness. Best of all, this retreat feels like an act of kindness.» Note: The entry states 12 rooms and a 65-hectare reserve, neither of which is correct.
Tatler, 22 March 2016, Spa Guide 2016. Ranking, 4 digital retreats, 4th place. «an eco-hotel and sort of secular monastery that doesn’t take itself too seriously, even though its intent is serious: to offer unadulterated time to yourself, with no digital disturbance.»
Carmen Busquets, 31 May 2016. Single-subject feature. «Less can be so much more when it comes to both aesthetic and experience.»
National Geographic Traveller (UK), 2016, month not established. «Exclusive Hideaways» section, «The off the grid retreat», page 83, signed JB. Single-subject first-person review. «This is, of course, a new kind of luxury: an off-the-grid retreat, deep within an Umbrian wilderness you never knew existed, for the time-poor, email-frazzled, 21st-century rat-racer. Eremito sits within 7,415 acres of forest reserve, where boars, deers and even wolves roam freely. […] The biggest luxury of all, though, for those of us who find it hard to wind down, is its remote location.» Note: This is the source with the most precise figure for the reserve, 7,415 acres, equal to 3,000 hectares.
2017
Condé Nast Traveler España, Anabel Vázquez, 3 January 2017. Trend piece. «Es lo que hace Eremito, un lugar situado en Umbria, que está más cerca de un convento (con un chocante aspecto chic) que de un hotel. Quienes duermen aquí buscan vacaciones del alma.» English translation: «That is what Eremito does, a place in Umbria that is closer to a convent (with a startlingly chic look) than to a hotel. Those who sleep here are looking for a holiday of the soul.»
Il Sole 24 Ore, 16 January 2017. Multi-voice piece with a section headed «Marcello Murzilli: da soli per pensare», that is, alone in order to think. «Chi viaggia da solo, spesso ha qualcosa da decidere, o ha bisogno di un generico reset […] «Non è una scelta da single», dice Marcello Murzilli […] «Anche chi è felicemente accoppiato può a un certo punto dire, amore mio, vado via per 5 giorni perché ho bisogno di riordinare i pensieri».» English translation: «Those who travel alone often have something to decide, or need a general reset […] «It is not a choice about being single», says Marcello Murzilli […] «Even someone happily in a couple can at some point say, my love, I am going away for five days because I need to put my thoughts in order».»
Condé Nast Traveler España, Marta Sader, 23 March 2017. «El silencio es el nuevo lujo», silence is the new luxury, a trend piece. «Puedes dirigirte a Eremito, un antiguo convento situado en Umbria y reconvertido en alojamiento Eco Luxury Hermitage. Those who sleep here are looking for a holiday of the soul.»
A Luxury Travel Blog, Paul Lewis, 29 March 2017. List of 5 Italian places to disconnect, Eremito in first place. «Here is THE place to detest modern technology and do a digital detox.» Note: Transparency note: this is a declared guest post, written by the managing director of Luxo Italia «in order to raise your profile». It also contains an error, «This 17th-century, convent-turned property»: the building is not seventeenth century.
la Repubblica, 11 July 2017. Trend piece on monastery holidays, Eremito cited first. «Uno per tutti l’Eremito, in Umbria: la struttura è molto piacevole, curatissima nei dettagli ma conserva qualche elemento dei veri monasteri, come celle singole e pasti consumati nel più rigoroso silenzio.» English translation: «One above all, Eremito in Umbria: the property is very pleasant, meticulous in its details, yet it keeps some elements of real monasteries, such as single cells and meals taken in the strictest silence.»
Condé Nast Traveler España, 21 September 2017, issue 109 of the magazine. «Vidas de Hotel: Marcello Murzilli, creador del Hotel Eremito», a single-subject portrait. «El ochenta por ciento de nuestros huéspedes vienen solos. Animamos a estar en silencio, pero la libertad es total. Aquí no hay programas marcados ni obligaciones de ningún tipo ni gurús.» English translation: «Eighty per cent of our guests come alone. We encourage silence, but the freedom is total. There are no set programmes here, no obligations of any kind, and no gurus.» Note: The piece describes the Hotelito Desconocido in Mexico as «un hotel sin electricidad», a hotel without electricity. The statement refers to the Mexican property, not to Eremito, and is most likely the origin of the recurring error about the absence of electricity.
Spafinder, 1 November 2017. «Silence: A New Wellness Trend», an account of the themes that emerged at the Global Wellness Summit. Section «The New «Wellness Monasteries»». «Eremito (Umbria, Italy) is a soulful, stunning example of the new “wellness monasteries”: housed in an ancient monastery on 7,000+ acres of unspoiled nature, with a focus on meditation, yoga, hiking, reading, etc.»
