Hushpitality and quietcation
Two new words
In recent months two new words have entered the language of travel.
Hushpitality describes hospitality that offers silence, calm and the absence of stimulation as the main value of a stay.
Quietcation describes the same need from the traveller’s side: a holiday chosen to rest, not to fill time. They are words of 2025 and 2026, and they describe a need that is growing.
Here since 2013
At Eremito we have known this need since 2013. When we opened in Parrano, on the foundations of a hermitage believed to date back to the fourteenth century, there was no category to describe us, so we called ourselves a contemporary hermitage: a hotel born as a contemporary and secular hermitage, where silence, the Celluzze, the shared table and the absence of Wi-Fi are the experience. Every evening dinner is shared in silence, accompanied by Gregorian chant. There is no phone signal and no television. Those who wish can remain in silence for their whole stay, with a small badge that says it for them.
Who cites us
This is why, when the two words arrived, Eremito was already there. Ideal Magazine placed it first among the places to find stillness and privacy. Baboo Travel called it the gold standard for hushpitality. Parade cited it among the examples of travel without Wi-Fi. Harper’s Bazaar Arabia chose it first among the places to practise a quietcation.
The practice, before the name
We did not invent silence, and the new words are welcome: every place that promises calm proves the choice made here in 2013 was right. The difference lies in the practice. A hermitage is not a remote place to sleep in, it is a way of being in the world for a few days, with hours, rules and renunciations that are the substance of the experience. If you are looking for a quietcation, here you will find the practice, before the name.
The questions we are asked most often
What does hushpitality mean?
It is the name the travel industry has recently given to the hospitality of silence: places where calm, the absence of stimulation and unscheduled time are the main value of the stay, not an added service.
And quietcation?
It is the same need seen from the traveller’s side: a holiday chosen to rest and be in silence, not to sightsee or fill the days. Hushpitality is the offer, quietcation is the demand.
Is Eremito a hushpitality hotel?
Yes, since 2013, before the word existed. Dinner in silence every evening, no Wi-Fi or phone signal, Celluzze designed for solo travellers, and the option to remain in silence for the whole stay. This is why the international press cites it as a reference.
Do I have to stay silent the whole time?
No. Silence is required only at dinner. During the day you can talk freely, and those who prefer complete silence can wear the “I am in silence” badge, available on request.
A day in silence
The rhythm of the day is the same for everyone, and everything in it is optional.
7:30 Awakening of the soul, readings in the chapel
7:50 Awakening of the body, gentle yoga
8:30 Breakfast
10:30 Free time, walks in the woods
13:00 Lunch
16:00 Relaxation area, Turkish bath and jacuzzi
18:00 Meditation and readings in the chapel
19:30 Silent dinner, accompanied by Gregorian chant
20:30 Conversation by the fireplace, for those who wish
You may follow all of it, or let it flow past you.
Not for everyone. For those who seek silence, not a schedule.
Find your rhythm
Hushpitality and quietcation are new words for an old need: to stop, to be quiet, to let time return to a human rhythm.
At Eremito this need has had a home since 2013, with silence as substance, not as a service.
